The House of Delegates on Wednesday approved a resolution calling on Congress to pass a balanced-budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution and requesting a constitutional convention to adopt the amendment.

Del. Ben Cline, R-Rockbridge County, sponsored the measure and debated it on the House floor with Del. Joe Morrissey, D-Henrico, and other House Democrats.

The measure is HJ852, and it was introduced at the request of Gov. Bob McDonnell.

The governor said the resolution supports a balanced-budget amendment that Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-6th District, is proposing in Congress.
