- Congressman Goodlatte introduced House Resolution 1430, the Security and Fairness Enhancement for America Act, legislation which would eliminate the visa lottery program from the Immigration and Nationality Act, thereby helping to ensure our nation’s security while making the administration of our immigration laws more consistent and fair. Each year there is a national immigration ‘lottery’ by which 50,000 aliens may become legal permanent residents of the U.S. The visa lottery program poses a national security threat. Under the program, each successful applicant is chosen at random and given the status of permanent resident based on pure luck. This legislation passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support.
- Congressman Goodlatte is a strong supporter of the Combat Meth Act, which strengthens criminal penalties, provides additional resources for law enforcement, and restricts the sale of the legal ingredients necessary to produce meth. This legislation was signed into law in 2006.
- Congressman Goodlatte co-sponsored House Resolution 1279, the Gang Deterrence and Community Protection Act. This legislation authorized increased funding to support federal, state, and local law enforcement efforts against violent gangs and coordinate agencies’ efforts to share intelligence and jointly investigate gangs. H.R. 1279 encourages partnerships across all levels of government to combat the growth of gang activity in our nation. This legislation passed the House in the 109th Congress and included an amendment authored by Rep. Goodlatte which increased penalties for certain violent crimes committed by illegal aliens.
- Congressman Goodlatte was instrumental in securing a permanent, part-time federal magistrate who will be assigned to the U.S. District Court in Harrisonburg which will help expedite the prosecution of violent criminals.
- Congressman Goodlatte, along with Congressman Frank Wolf, worked to have four full-time U.S. Marshals assigned to the U.S. District Court in Harrisonburg.
- Congressman Goodlatte secured federal funding for the Northwest Virginia Regional Drug Task Force and the Rockingham County R.U.S.H Drug Task Force to fight methamphetamine trafficking.
- Congressman Goodlatte helped secure funding for a full-time gang prosecutor to help our local law enforcement officials get violent criminals off our streets and out of our communities.
- Congressman Goodlatte helped to provide new funding for Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) Agents which will assist our local law enforcement officers in removing illegal criminals from our area.
